Nigella Lawson speaks on her father’s death for the first time

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson has shared an update with her social media followers, thanking them for their support following her father’s death.

The news of his passing was covered by the BBC and The Guardian on April 4, naming the former conservative chancellor as “one of the most consequential of all post-war UK chancellors”.

Nigel Lawson was 91 years old when he passed, with a political career of almost five decades to his name. He served under Margaret Thatcher during the 1980s, holding a number of different roles, before retiring to the backbench in 1992. He went on to sit in the House of Lords until his retirement, just three short months before his passing.

Nigel is survived by six children, and it was the 63-year-old Nigella who took to Twitter to express her gratitude to her 2.7 million followers for the love and support being directed to their family in their time of grief, as well as assuring them that while she needed some time, she would return to them.

“Thank you for all your kind messages,” she wrote. “And I’ll be back on here properly tomorrow.”

Thank you for all your kind messages. And I’ll be back on here properly tomorrow

— Nigella Lawson (@Nigella_Lawson) April 4, 2023

“Thinking of you, dearest girl. Your father was always kind and a consummate gentleman whenever I came across him as a journalist,” journalist Pádraig Belton wrote in response, before sharing a brief insight into his experiences with the late Nigel.

“Been thinking of you, and Dominic and your kids today. Your dad was an interesting man,” editor Fiammetta Rocco said. “Scary, but very smart.”

“Be well. Know that you are loved. Holding you and your family in prayer during this time of loss,” a reverend offered.

“Don't rush yourself - give yourself enough time to process it all. Wrap yourself in the good memories & cosset yourself however you choose about the not so good,” one kind supporter advised. “Take care of yourself first - we can all wait.”

Nigella wasn’t the only notable figure to note Nigel’s death on social media, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sharing his condolences with his own 1.9 million followers.

"One of the first things I did as Chancellor was hang a picture of Nigel Lawson above my desk," he said.

"He was a transformational Chancellor and an inspiration to me and many others. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

One of the first things I did as Chancellor was hang a picture of Nigel Lawson above my desk.

He was a transformational Chancellor and an inspiration to me and many others.

My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. pic.twitter.com/SPwcnoUFnQ

— Rishi Sunak (@RishiSunak) April 3, 2023

And Britain’s former prime minister Boris Johnson also had something to offer, writing that Nigel “was a fearless and original flame of free market Conservatism. He was a tax-cutter and simplifier who helped transform the economic landscape and helped millions of British people achieve their dreams … He was a prophet of Brexit and a lover of continental Europe. He was a giant.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Images: Getty

Michael Slater hospitalised

Australian cricketer Michael Slater has been hospitalised as domestic violence charges against him were dismissed on mental health grounds.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Lachlan Kirby told Waverley Local Court - where Mr Slater was due to appear to appeal the charges - that the cricketer had been detained by police and paramedics on Tuesday night and taken to a mental health facility on the Northern Beaches.

The 52-year-old had appealed for the charges to be dealt with under the Mental Health Act prior to his hospitalisation.

Mr Slater’s barrister, Richard Pontello, appeared at the hearing via video link and consented to Magistrate Ross Hudson making his decision in Mr Slater’s absence, according to news.com.au.

The former Test cricketer was first charged late last year for allegedly using a mobile phone to harass his former partner between March and October, as well as stalking and intimidating her in Randwick on October 12 and 13.

He was arrested for a second time in December and charged with contravening an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), as well as another charge of using a carriage service to menace, harass or intimidate his former partner.

Mr Slater sent 66 messages and called his ex 18 times in a period of two-and-a-half hours on the night of December 14, the court heard.

The court also heard that although his former partner blocked his number, Mr Slater sent multiple messages to her via WhatsApp that were signed under the name “MJS”.

Last week, Mr Pontello told the court Mr Slater was suffering from several mental illnesses, including major depressive disorder and ADHD at the time of the offences, but was in remission.

Mr Pontello previously told the court Mr Slater spent 108 days in a rehabilitation facility between January and March this year, and argued that it was in the public interest for Mr Slater to be dealt with under the Mental Health Act so his treatment could continue.

The police prosecution opposed the application due to the seriousness of the charges and the fact that he was out on bail for the second round of charges.

Mr Hudson noted that Mr Slater was seeking treatment for his mental health before ruling that the charges be dealt with under the Mental Health Act.

“He has a significant illness and has done significant work since that period of time, and he should be proud of that,” Mr Hudson said.

He ordered Mr Slater abide by a treatment plan for 12 months.

Mr Slater will also be the subject of an AVO from his former partner for five years.

Image: Getty Images

Kelly Slater’s former beachside stay goes under the hammer

The coastal home that hosted US surfing champion Kelly Slater has been listed for sale.

It isn’t the only reason Slater has been in the news lately, after he made waves when he spoke out against the Australian government’s handling of Novak Djokovic’s deportation and its response to the NSW flood crisis, which he said was “nothing short of appalling”.

The home’s current owner, former Quiksilver International boss Bruce Raymond, has listed the home with plans to stay local following the sale. Raymond, who learned how to surf when he was just four-years-old, has lived near the beach all his life and continues to surf everyday.

“This was to be our forever home but I’m scaling down now. "Those are the rules": Kelly Slater barred from Australia

Surfing legend Kelly Slater has been told he will not be able to enter Australia without a Covid-19 vaccination.

The 11-time world champion has previously refused to disclose his vaccination status and spoken out about his exasperation about making the jab mandatory, but assured fans he's not anti-vax.

He has, however, publicly defended American podcast host Joe Rogan over dishing out dangerous health advice, and more recently blasted the Australian government over the decision to deport Novak Djokovic.

After Novak's highly publicised deportation last week, Slater took to social media to say, "maybe Stockholm Syndrome can now change its name to Melbourne/Australia syndrome", and "so much brainwashed hatred in people's hearts regardless of vax status".

After receiving backlash over his views, the surfing champ deleted the posts.

Despite his opinions, Slater now faces the same fate as Novak Djokovic, as he risks being barred from entering the country if he continues to refuse to disclose his vaccination status, unless he proves he is eligible for a legitimate exemption.

Slater is planning to enter Australia for the upcoming World Surf League championship events, which will take place in Victoria in April, before another event in Western Australia.

Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck said Slater "has no chance of getting into the country" if he is not vaccinated.

"I reckon he knows the rules. It doesn't matter whether you're a surfer, or a tennis player, a tourist or anyone else, those are the rules. They apply to everyone," Colbeck said.

"I don't like the chances of him competing in Victoria, and I'd hate to think of what the chances were of him competing in Western Australia."
